Negative ‘Spider-Man’ reviews prompt online schadenfreude

It has no doubt been a very bad day for Julie Taymor and the team behind ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,’ the $65-million Broadway musical that received an avalanche of negative reviews this morning from theater critics around the country.
In the online world, the scathing notices have provided yet another opportunity for amateur naysayers with a lot of free time to stick pins in Taymor’s already punctured musical. The gleeful schadenfreude can be seen in the video above, which features negative pull-quotes from various ‘Spider-Man’ reviews -- including some from Charles McNulty’s review in the Los Angeles Times -- set to a blaring background from an old animated ‘Spider-Man’ television series.
In response to the reviews, Rick Miramontez, the spokesman for the Broadway show, told the Associated Press that ‘this pile-on by the critics is a huge disappointment.... Changes are still being made and any review that runs before the show is frozen is totally invalid.’
The Broadway musical is still officially in preview performances and isn’t scheduled to open at the Foxwoods Theatre in New York until March 15. Critics usually wait until around opening night to see a new show, but ‘Spider-Man’ is regarded as a special case, with numerous delays, an unusually long preview period and tickets that cost in the hundreds of dollars for a single seat.
