L.A. Master Chorale announces 2011-12 season

The Los Angeles Master Chorale will perform six programs as well as its usual lineup of holiday concerts as part of its 2011-12 season, the organization has announced. Highlights for the 48th season include the world premiere of a piece by Gabriela Lena Frank and the U.S. premieres of works by James Newton and Thomas Jennefelt.
Music director Grant Gershon will conduct the season’s concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
In addition, the L.A. Master Chorale will appear several times in the coming season with the L.A. Philharmonic, including the orchestra’s staged productions of Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ and John Adams’ ‘The Gospel According to the Other Mary.’
The first concert of the season (Oct. 16) will feature Jennefelt’s ‘Music for a big church; for tranquility’ and former L.A. Master Chorale composer-in-residence Morten Lauridsen’s ‘Lux Aeterna.’ The concert will also include pieces by Eric Whitacre, Tarik O’Regan and Shawn Kirchner. David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work ‘The Little Match Girl Passion’ will be the centerpiece for the season’s second concert (Nov. 13), which will also include the U.S. premiere of Newton’s ‘Mass’ and the performance of two pieces by Bach.
Stravinsky’s ‘Symphony of Psalms’ and Bruckner’s ‘Mass in E minor’ will be performed during the season’s third concert (Feb. 12, 2012), while Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ will be performed at two concerts (March 31 and April 1, 2012) in collaboration with the Baroque music group Musica Angelica.
Venezuelan music will be at the center of a concert (April 29, 2012) that will feature Frank’s world-premiere piece, with the folk-jazz ensemble Huayucaltia. The season’s final concert (June 10, 2012) will be a tribute to Henryk Górecki, featuring three pieces by the late Polish composer, who died in November, as well as a piece by Brahms.
The L.A. Master Chorale will hold two ‘Holiday Wonders’ concerts (Dec. 3 and 10), plus its ‘Rejoice! A Classical Christmas’ (Dec. 11) and ‘Messiah’ sing-along (Dec. 12).
