Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs working on opera project with Adam Rapp

Karen O, the indie-rock songstress of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is joining a growing list of pop-music stars to make the cross over into the world of the stage. This fall, she will be teaming up with playwright Adam Rapp on a project being promoted as a ‘psycho opera’ that will premiere in New York in October.
O’s ‘opera’ is being described as ‘an assault on the tragic joys of youth,’ but no title has been announced. Rapp will direct the production, which is expected to run as part of a four-day arts festival from Oct. 13 to 16 at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, according to Playbill. Rapp is a Pulitzer Prize finalist whose plays include ‘Red Light Winter,’ ‘The Metal Children’ and the recent ‘Hallway Trilogy.’
The new ‘opera’ will be produced by the Studio, which is a new initiative launched this year by the Creators Project, an arts and technology group.
As a musician, O has served as the frontwoman for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs since its inception in 2000. She also wrote music for the Spike Jonze movie ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’
Other pop stars who have crossed over into the world of stage include Bono and the Edge of U2, Rufus Wainwright, Duncan Sheik and Adam Duritz of Counting Crows.
