La Mascota Bakery: A Boyle Heights tradition

La Mascota Bakery first opened on a sleepy little street in Boyle Heights in 1952. Seven years later, it moved to its current location, where it has stood for the last 50 years, a few doors down on the same street that today is the bustling thoroughfare of Whittier Boulevard. La Mascota isn’t just a place to stop in for a cup of champurrado, the cinnamon-scented hot Mexican chocolate thickened with masa harina, or bolillos. It’s a neighborhood mainstay. Jenn Garbee has the story.
