Make that a 28-game hitting streak for Ethier; infield single keeps streak alive

Another game, another hit for Andre Ethier. Just like the last 27 games.

Ethier continued his career-high hitting streak Monday night with an infield hit in the fifth inning off the glove of shortstop Starlin Castro.

That pushed the longest hitting streak in the majors in two years to 28 consecutive games. It’s the second-longest hitting streak in Los Angeles Dodgers history. Willie Davis holds the all-time franchise mark with a 31-game hitting streak set in 1969.

This was the second time in consecutive games that Ethier kept alive his hitting streak with an infield hit.

With runners on the corners and two outs, Either hit a drive off left-hander James Russell into the hole between third and short. The speedy Starlin managed to close in on the drive, but it ricocheted off his glove.

Starlin was running away from first deep into the hole, and even if he had held onto the ball, there is no way to assume he could have leapt in the air and fired in time to get Ethier.

The single scored the Dodgers’ third run of the inning, to give them a 5-1 lead.
