Nov. 4: “Otto Neurath: Gypsy Urbanism,” the first exhibition of works by the early 20th century Austrian designer-philosopher-urbanist in the United States, opens at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, through Jan. 31. $7; on Nov. 7, admission will be free from noon to 5 p.m. 835 N. Nov. 5: The Thursday Garden Talks With Lili Singer series continues with “Gardening in the Shadow.” Singer will share common and unusual shade-loving plants and discuss watering, pest management and other practices. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. $20. Nov. 5: Heath Ceramics hosts an opening reception for a show of sculpture, salvaged-wood furniture and ironwood bowls by designer Alma Allen. Nov. 6: The Contemporary Crafts Market’s 24th season will feature distinctive works by more than 250 artists, including glassware, ceramics, hand-painted textiles and custom furniture. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Nov. 8. Nov 7: Jeannine Stein will speak on her book “Re-Bound: Creating Handmade Books From Recycled and Repurposed Materials,” whose projects including making a notebook with a potato chip bag and turning a hot water bottle into a journal (shown above, right). Nov. 7: “The Art of Native American Basketry” opens in conjunction with “The California Native Basketry Landscape,” an outdoor exhibition of native plants important to the practice of basket weaving and the ecology of California. The opening weekend will include the Intertribal Arts Marketplace Nov. 7 and 8, featuring artisans from around the country, music and dance. Museum admission is $3 to $9.
