Whether you’re shoveling snow back East or dodging rain here in the West, some new coat racks might spur you to hang up your winter wear regardless of the weather.
Gone are traditional fluted columns, ornate hooks and circular umbrella depositories.
Designers today are crafting clever racks that could pass as functional art.
British designer Tom Dixon’s new Peg coat stand, shown above, has circular discs that can be arranged in different configurations. The stand comes in oak with a natural finish or in birch with a black, white or bright orange lacquer. The piece ships flat. Prices begin around $750.
Merkled Studio, based in Portland, Ore., has a new powder-coated aluminum coat rack, pictured at right. It’s composed of three lightweight panels and also ships flat. The striking design is 17 inches wide and 5 feet, 4 inches tall, and it comes in orange or white. It’s made to order. Price: $525; shipping is about $60.

These colorful, powder-coated steel coat racks make a statement with simplicity. They are the Room & Board Six-Arm design, in six bold new colors for 2011: red, green, blossom and navy, pictured above, plus yellow and a light blue called Ocean. The racks come in two sizes: 56 inches high ($199), ostensibly for kids, and 68 inches high ($229) for grown-ups.
Pottery Barn Teen’s metal handlebar hooks come with a peel-and-stick black bike decal. The black grips on the handlebars are helpful for hanging jackets and book bags. Price: $59, shipping included.
The wall-mounted Muir coat rack from Amenity Home does double duty as a letter holder. It is made with reclaimed wood and comes in two sizes (42 or 54 inches) and two finishes (natural or walnut). Price: $187 for the smaller five-peg rack, $223 for the six-peg.
Chiasso’s Colore coat rack is somewhat reminiscent of the classic Eames Hang-It-All. Price: $78.
Tree by Dutch designer Robert Bronwasser for Cascando can hold as many as 20 coats. It’s made of lacquered medium-density fiberboard and comes in white, green or Warm Gray. Price: about $700. Contact the manufacturer at design@cascando.nl.
Scot Herbst’s Vinyl Clip coat rack for CB2, left, is composed of bright-yellow PVC-dipped metal hooks complemented by a matching looped tripod base. Price: $99.95. The Telphone coat rack, right, designed by L.A.-based Mash Studios for CB2, features four hooks that play off urban utility poles. Price: $89.95.
