Located near the Venice Circle in the land of funky vintage clothing shops and touristy sunglasses stores is a new home store, Hot Moon Collection, whose name comes from a Pablo Neruda poem. Owner Gabrielle Ruvolo, above, has placed a dog bowl out front, and her two Standard poodles are inside the shop -- the canine friendly attitude somewhat surprising for a store carrying this level of collectibles.

At Hot Moon Collection, textiles from Mexico, Africa, India, Japan and Indonesia line one wall of shelves, some with prices in the $600 range. Pillows made out of Mexican serape fabric and water-colored silk are found throughout the shop; pillows start at around $100.

The two-story space has new tabletop items such as Amish cutting boards and Italian glassware, as well as vintage finds such as the German pottery line Ruscha. An area upstairs is devoted to flowing tunics, cotton separates, Michael Star woven beach totes and lots of broad-rimmed hats.

So what’s the common thread? Ruvolo, a lifelong traveler who once ran a home shop in Mexico and more recently worked at Pat McGann on La Cienega Boulevard in L.A., says that the through-line is simple: “These are all pieces I love. What I have in the store is a culmination of collecting things and finding artists and manufacturers that are all unique.”

Though the selection isn’t huge, the shop gets credit for offering items that you haven’t seen a million times. It’s a refreshing change, even for industry insiders used to seeing the same New York International Gift Show finds over and over in stores. Hit up Hot Moon Collection for a wedding or hostess gift or splurge on a home accessory for yourself, and you’ll score high marks for originality.
