The bursts of bold color punctuating the L.A. store H.D. Buttercup are the work of local textile designer Andrea Bernstein, who has opened a shop-within-the-shop called Millworks. The name pays homage to the tradition of American textile factories, and all of the fabrics are made in Southern California. The screen printing is done by hand in downtown Los Angeles.
Bernstein’s artistic inspiration comes from her mother, a colorist who had a knack for mixing traditional with modern in the home. And though Bernstein channels memories of her mother’s vibrant Pucci dresses and Marimekko fabrics, she also has based some designs on nature, including flowers indigenous to California. Several of her patterns were derived from her neighbor’s succulent garden or her rose garden.
“Flowers are so beautiful in their simplicity,” said Bernstein, whose designs change with the seasons. Her patterns are sold at H.D. Buttercup as throw pillows, bedding and fabrics; upholstered furniture is coming later. The goal: evoke a happy feeling.
“People are burned out on the overly precious,” Bernstein said. “It’s time to have a little fun.”
