A man who allegedly tried to rob a Metro PCS store in the Sacramento area was shot and killed by a store employee on Sunday, Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said.

The would-be robber was allegedly armed with a handgun, authorities said.

‘We have a deceased male in the back area of the store. There is a handgun at his feet,’ said Sgt. Jason Ramos with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

One of the store employees said he shot and killed the man, Ramos said.

Authorities said the employees at the Folsom Boulevard store called for help and went outside.

Both employees were detained by authorities, but were later allowed to leave. They are said to be cooperating with investigators.

Sheriff’s officials say they will also be investigating whether the gun used to kill the suspected robber was purchased legitimately.
