Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson seemed to know their divorce news would get the gossip flowing, saying Tuesday in a statement, ‘While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.’
But a few details are leaking out, among them a People report that Johansson has been apartment hunting in New York City and is now vacationing in Jamaica with friends.
Johannson initiated the split, a source told Us Weekly, citing distance as a big problem with the relationship. ‘They spent a lot of time apart when they are working. ... She’s been unhappy for a while.’
According to Us, Reynolds has been platonically ‘reaching out to an ex in the past few months’ as a means of ‘seeking comfort.’ (He was, incidentally, previously engaged to Alanis Morrisette.)
The couple, who wed in 2008 at a wilderness retreat in Canada with only a few close friends and family members attending, has tried to avoid tabloid attention while married. ‘We don’t shop on Robertson,’ a shrugging Reynolds told The Times, referring to the boulevard that’s home to celeb-magnet stores such as Kitson, not to mention persistent paparazzi.
Referring to the actor’s turn in the thriller ‘Buried,’ Hero Complex‘s Geoff Boucher described Reynolds recently as seeming ‘far more at ease being in a coffin than on the gossip pages.’ So this wasn’t exactly the way Reynolds imagined things going on the home front when he talked to People after being chosen its sexiest man alive for 2010.
‘Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest man, take out the garbage,’ ‘ he said. ‘That does sound better.’
