Some of these prices are downright scary

Some people love a little goth glamor, before or after Halloween.

In this installment of our Scrimp/Splurge feature, staff writer David A. Keeps looks at the cheeky decorative skulls that are popping up in so many stores. For the inspiration behind some of these pieces, look to British artist Damien Hirst, who last year unveiled “For the Love of God,” a platinum skull cast from an 18th century man.

The skull is paved with 8,601 diamonds and — for good measure — a single pear-shaped pink sparkler in the center of the forehead.

‘I just want to celebrate life by saying to hell with death,’ the artist told a British newspaper. ‘What better way of saying that than by taking the ultimate symbol of death and covering it in the ultimate symbol of luxury, desire and decadence?” Priced in 2007 at 50 million pounds (at the time, about $99 million), the piece reportedly sold to an investment group that included Hirst.

Although some criticized the sale as an elaborate art-world stunt, the piece clearly has gotten under the skin of designers. Take a spin through a photo gallery looking at skulls that seemingly pay homage to Hirst (but are much more reasonably priced, and probably about to go on sale.)
