Bloomingdale’s outlets may eventually open in California, Macy’s CEO says

When Macy’s Inc. announced last month that it would open a Bloomingdale’s outlet concept, many California shoppers were disappointed to learn that none of the initial four stores would be in the state.

But in an interview with the Times in New York on Tuesday, Macy’s Chief Executive Terry Lundgren said the company planned to open more outlets as early as 2011 -- and California would be a top market for expansion.

‘The idea is let’s tweak it, let’s get it right and once that happens, certainly California will be part of that strategy,’ Lundgren said from his offices above Macy’s iconic store on West 34th Street. ‘Once we get the concept down right, the expansion will be easy.’

The first four stores -- in Paramus, N.J.; Miami; Sunrise, Fla.; and Woodbridge, Va. -- are scheduled to open in the summer or fall and will feature apparel, handbags, jewelry and other items.

Bloomingdale’s will join other upscale retailers that operate outlets, such as Saks Inc. and Nordstrom Inc.
