Washington National Cathedral remains structurally sound despite damage to some spires from the 5.8 earthquake, its officials said in a statement.
‘Engineers report that the building itself did not incur any damage to its structural integrity,’ the statement said. ‘For safety precautions, however, the building and the perimeter will remain closed until further notice.’
Three of the four corner spires cracked and fell.

‘We at the National Cathedral are deeply grateful for the expressions of support that have poured in from across the country via phone calls, emails, and other media,’ Cathedral Dean Samuel T. Lloyd III said in the statement. ‘We give thanks to God that no one was injured and that preliminary reports indicate that despite the damage, the building will soon be accessible.’
