Times columnist Bill Plaschke, never one to mince words, was impressed with Michael Phelps’ effort in his first attempt to win a record eight gold medals in the Beijing Games. Phelps won the 400-meter individual medley in style. ‘Oh, man, did you see that. . . . He wiped ‘em out, he wiped everyone out,’ Plaschke said.
