Lee Sang-hwa of Korea defeated two favorites to capture the gold medal in women’s 500-meter long-track speedskating this afternoon at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Vancouver.
Germany’s Jenny Wolf, the world record-holder in the event, and China’s Wang Beixing were expected to battle for the gold after the two had won all eight races during the World Cup season this winter. But Lee held off Wolf by .05 of a second to finish with a total time of 1 minute 16.09 seconds.
Wolf had the best time in the second race, but it wasn’t enough to catch Lee, leaving the German with a silver at 1:16.14. Wang took the bronze in 1:16.63.
