The world discovered another rat this month, and I’m not even talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger. The red-crested tree rat, which is much cuter than its name suggests, had not been seen since 1898 despite several searches for it, according to the American Bird Conservancy. Then, on May 4, it showed up at the door of an eco-lodge in a Colombian nature reserve, which the conservancy had a hand in co-founding.

The planet loses species at a much faster pace than it finds new -- or old -- ones. So this good-looking rat is one to celebrate, even if it is a rodent, and an 18-inch-long one at that.
