Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) is planning to hold a news conference Wednesday in Los Angeles to discuss her ‘political future,’ an aide confirmed Tuesday.

Bass is widely expected to seek the 33rd Congressional District seat held by Rep. Diane Watson (D-Los Angeles). Watson, 76, announced last week she will not seek reelection this year.

[Updated: 5:05 p.m.] Bass’s office confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Watson would attend the news conference.

Many insiders expect Bass will get Watson’s endorsement, but Bass spokeswoman Shannon Murphy would say only that the speaker, who must leave the Assembly this year because of term limits, will discuss her plans at a 10 a.m. news conference at her Mid-Wilshire office, and that a number of community leaders will attend.
