The state Senate on Wednesday approved a bill that would increase by three months the age at which children would be allowed to start kindergarten.
Under the proposal, SB 1381 by Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), children would have to turn 5 by Sept. 1 in order to be eligible for kindergarten. The measure is expected to lower the state’s kindergarten population by 100,000 and save the state an estimated $700 million.
