California election results: Some Assembly races remain up in the air

A day after California’s primary election, here are some of the races we are keeping an eye on:

Assembly District 7:- Michael Allen, an aide to Sen. Pat Wiggins (D-Santa Rosa) has a 500-vote lead over Vallejo Councilman Michael Wilson in the Democratic primary. This district – which stretches from Napa to Sonoma and down to Vallejo – is strongly Democratic.

Assembly District 9: Sacramento Councilman Kevin McCarty is clinging to a razor-thin lead – just over 30 votes -- over Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Dickinson has run for the seat twice before and lost. McCarty has been a council rival of Mayor Kevin Johnson.

Assembly District 20: Attorney Bob Wieckowski, backed by trial lawyers, law enforcement groups and the California Nurses Assn., has a 1,000-vote lead over rival Garrett Yee in the Democratic primary for this Bay Area district.

Yee was backed by business groups and health insurers.

Assembly District 70: This four-way Republican primary to replace Assemblyman Chuck DeVore of Irvine was the closest Republican Assembly race of the night.

Don Wagner, a community college district board member, now has an 800-vote lead over Irvine Councilman Steven Choi – which, unfortunately for Choi, is a lot of ground to make up.

Senate District 40: Assemblywoman Mary Salas (D-San Diego) has a 300-vote lead over former Assemblyman Juan Vargas (D-San Diego).
