Meg Whitman drops another $20 million into campaign

Meg Whitman has opened her checkbook again, contributing another $20 million to her effort to become California’s next governor. This contribution, filed with state elections officials on Monday, brings the former EBay chief executive’s total personal donations to the race to more than $91 million.

Whitman contributed about $71 million of her personal wealth while she was seeking the Republican nomination, which she won last week in a landslide victory over state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. That race shattered spending records for a California primary.

Whitman’s latest contribution comes as she gears up to battle Democratic nominee Jerry Brown, who did not face a significant primary challenge and has raised nearly $29 million so far.
