Republican Meg Whitman earned the endorsement of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which represents nearly 10,000 members of the Los Angeles Police Department. ‘In the end, it came down to the fact that Whitman is prepared with an economic plan,’ said LAPPL President Paul M. Weber of his group’s decision to back Whitman over Democrat Jerry Brown. ‘And while we appreciate Brown’s 40 years of service, we’re gravely concerned over his lack of a comprehensive one.’ ‘Her commitment to fully fund public safety and lifelong staunch support of the death penalty are significant factors in making her the clear choice,’ he said in a statement released Thursday.
Whitman has called for moving state workers to a 401(k)-style pension plan, but has told law-enforcement groups those proposed changes would not apply to them.
Jerry Brown spokesman Sterling Clifford said Whitman was pandering to law-enforcement groups, offering them an unrealistic deal on pensions that amounted to little more than ‘a political ploy.’
