Backers choose sides in congressional races

In some of the area congressional races where intraparty fights are brewing, candidates have been busy lining up supporters.

State Sen. Ron Calderon (D-Montebello), who is running for Congress in the newly drawn 38th District, has been endorsed by state Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome Horton, a Democrat from Inglewood. Also seeking the seat is Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood).

Susan Shelley, one of two Republican candidates in the heavily Democratic 30th Congressional District in the San Fernando Valley, announced backing from conservative David Benning, a former GOP candidate for Congress. Shelley is running in the same district where Democratic Reps. Howard Berman of Valley Village and Brad Sherman of Sherman Oaks are waging what is expected to become one of the costliest House races in history.

State Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) is being supported by Emily’s List in her bid for the newly drawn 35th Congressional District. The organizaton raises money for pro-choice female candidates. Rep. Joe Baca (D-Rialto), has announced he will run in this district.
