Candidates line up more endorsements

Rep. Janice Hahn (D-San Pedro), who is running against two other Democratic elected officials in the newly drawn 44th Congressional District, added more names to her endorsements list. On Friday, Hahn’s campaign released a list of nearly 60 community activists and local Democratic Party leaders, including Jimmie Woods Gray, a past chairman of the L.A. County Democratic Party and John W. Frierson of the New Frontier Democratic Club, the oldest African American Democratic club west of the Mississippi River. The Communications Workers of America Southern California Council also announced its support of Hahn on Friday.
Earlier last week, several Lynwood officials said they are backing Hahn, including Mayor Pro Tem Jim Morton, who also is backing one of Hahn’s rivals, Assemblyman Isadore Hall III (D-Compton). Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Long Beach) also is seeking reelection from this new district.
State Sen. Ron Calderon (D-Montebello), who is running for Congress in the newly drawn 38th District, picked up the endorsement of fellow state Sen. Curren Price (D-Inglewood). Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood) also is seeking the seat.
And speaking of Calderon, Ron’s nephew Ian Calderon, a Whittier Democrat who is running for Assembly from the new 57th District, last week received an endorsement from Assemblyman V. Manuel Perez (D- Coachella). Among other candidates for the seat is former Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez.
In other Assembly races, labor leader Jimmy Gomez announced an endorsement from California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. Gomez is one of several Democrats running for the open 51st District in northeast Los Angeles. In the already crowded race for the open 46th District seat in the San Fernando Valley, Democratic businesswoman Laurette Healey won backing from Assemblyman Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens).
