The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation’s about-face on whether to fund breast cancer examinations by Planned Parenthood drew praise from California Democrats on Friday.
‘This is the right decision,’ Gov. Jerry Brown tweeted. ‘Now Komen must stand by it.’
The state Democrats, who overwhelmingly favor abortion rights, had slammed the breast cancer foundation for its decision, disclosed this week, to pull $700,000 in funding from Planned Parenthood. Komen had cited a new policy that it could not support groups that were under federal investigation. Planned Parenthood has been the subject of an inquiry under a congressional investigation by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla) looking into whether the organization used federal funds for abortion services.
But Friday morning, Komen announced it was reinstating the funding. It said it was changing its criteria to establish that investigations must be ‘criminal and conclusive in nature and not political.’
California Democratic politicians joined other abortion rights advocates in celebrating on social media.
‘Good work everyone,’ tweeted State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco).
