The Silver Lake Chorus will celebrate its 1-year anniversary with a show Friday doing what the choir was formed to do: give the full-blown choral treatment to original songs written for the group by leading lights of the indie-rock and alternative music worlds.
Friday’s performance at the Echo Park United Methodist Church, where the fledgling outfit first held auditions, will highlight songs by Aimee Mann, Bon Iver, Sia, Of Montreal, Jon Brion and the New Pornographers, chorus creative director Samantha Rader says. Singer-songwriter John Gold will open.
All those names are expected to turn up in the song credits on the 25-member group’s debut album, which is being produced by Australian singer and songwriter Ben Lee. The album, Rader says, also will have original material by Beck, Tegan and Sara, the Bird and the Bee, and Zooey Deschanel.
During the group’s first year, it has given dozen shows at the Mint, Sunset Junction and Spaceland, among others. It also landed gigs singing the theme song for the action-comedy film “MacGruber,” and adding backup vocals to the Lonely Island’s whimsically self-congratulatory single (featuring Akon) “I Just Had Sex.”
