Organizers of the Sunset Junction festival say they have secured firm commitments for the more than $141,000 they need to pay the city before officials will consider issuing permits for the event this weekend.
‘Sunset Junction organizers have acquired the 141k to pay the fees that the city is requesting for the 2011 festival,” festival booker Jennifer Tefft announced today in a Facebook post. “There’s a public hearing tomorrow morning at 9:30am to decide the fate of the Junction. Its not canceled yet! Don’t make other plans for the weekend!! Will keep you all posted.’
It remains unclear if they will have the funds in hand when the Los Angeles Board of Public works meets again Wednesday.
[Updated, 5:10 p.m.: ‘There were some gifts from supporters, but the large amount was from an anonymous donor, ‘ Tefft said when reached by phone. ‘About two-thirds of it was from an organization that loves and supports the festival.’]
On Monday, the board denied the festival’s operating permits, citing more than $400,000 in unpaid fees for the 2011 and 2010 festivals. But they said they might agree to reconsider their decision at Wednesday’s meeting if the festival pays what is owed for this year.
Board president Andrea Alarcon said she hadn’t heard from festival organizers about how their fundraising efforts were progressing.
‘It’s all over the Internet that they found the money, but at some point they need to touch base with me,’ Alarcon said.
