Angels Manager Mike Scioscia announced his starting lineup for Game 1 of the division series against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night, and Gary Matthews Jr. got the nod over Juan Rivera in right field.
Matthews, who played sparingly in the second half after losing his job to Rivera, has three hits in six career at-bats against Red Sox Game 1 starter Jon Lester, two of them home runs in a game at Fenway Park on April 23.
Scioscia also said that right fielder Vladimir Guerrero, who missed six games in mid-September because of an irritated right knee, will be relegated to designated hitter in the series, not because he tweaked the knee in the last week of the season, but because he wants to preserve him as much as he can and have him focus on offense.
The Angels’ Game 1 lineup:
3B: Chone Figgins
LF: Garret Anderson
1B: Mark Teixeira
DH: Vladimir Guerrero
CF: Torii Hunter
2B: Howie Kendrick
C: Mike Napoli
RF: Gary Matthews Jr.
SS: Erick Aybar
P: John Lackey
