Baseball stat guru Nate Silver, before he became a sabermetic political junkie at FiveThirtyEight.com, came up with his ‘Secret Sauce,’ or keys to success in Major League Baseball’s postseason.

It basically emphasized 1. power pitching staff, 2. a good closer and 3. good defense to win a short series.

New York magazine took Silver’s theory and applied it to this year’s teams, and its Ouija board showed that the Yankees are favorites to succeed in this fall’s playoffs, thanks in part to having CC Sabathia in their rotation and with Mark Teixeira shoring up their once miserable defense.

But the Dodgers ended up second in this statistical ranking, followed by the Giants, Tigers and Red Sox. The Angels didn’t make the top five.
