The Lakers’ second unit was leading by one point with seven seconds left in a lively scrimmage, and Shannon Brown was at the free-throw line with an opportunity to give that squad a two-point lead over the first unit.
Before Brown took the shot, Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher pointed to Brown’s right hand, which had blood on it. It was Bryant’s and Fisher’s way of freezing Brown. Brown looked down and wiped the blood away.
It worked. Brown missed the free throw, leaving the door open for the first unit.
After Bryant made a jumper over Sasha Vujacic for a 45-44 victory, Bryant began talking trash.
‘Once again,’ Bryant yelled. ‘You stupid...didn’t double. What are they doing.’
Obviously nothing.
