James Stewart, the reigning AMA Supercross champion, won his heat race at Angel Stadium in Anaheim in impressive fashion amid a mixture of cheers and boos from the fans.
Stewart finished 6.820 seconds ahead of the second-place rider, Andrew Short. Ryan Villopto was third.
Austin Stroupe jumped out to an early first-lap lead, but Stewart passed him on the second lap and won comfortably.
Justin Brayton, a rider from Murrieta, was fifth.
Josh Grant, a rider from Riverside and winner of last year’s AMA Supercross season opener in Anaheim, was ninth. The top-nine riders in each heat race qualified for the main event.
