Cal Poly Pomona won its first NCAA Division II men’s basketball title today with a 65-53 victory over second-ranked Indiana (Pa.) in Springfield, Mass.
The unranked Broncos (28-6), who lost in the championship game to Findlay last year on a buzzer-beating shot in overtime, used their signature stifling defense to slow down Indiana (33-3).
Donnelle Booker led a balanced Cal Poly scoring attack with 13 points. Dahir Nasser and Austin Swift each had 12 points and Tobias Jahn added 10. Dwayne Fells finished with nine points and six rebounds for the Broncos, who held the Crimson Hawks to 30.2% shooting from the field.
Indiana was led by Darryl Webb (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Akida McLain (10 points, seven rebounds).
