Switzerland was leading Spain, 1-0, after 85 minutes of their World Cup match Wednesday in Durban, South Africa.
Gelson Fernandes raced onto a loose ball to score into the open goal in the 52nd minute as the Swiss went ahead on their second chance of the game.
Spain struggled to get through a well-organized Swiss team with Andres Iniesta creating most of the chances for the European champion.
Fernando Torres and Jesus Navas came on in the 62nd minute as Spain looked for an equalizer, with Iniesta curling just wide in the 68th minute. Torres’ entry brought an immediate effect as the Spain striker had several chances before Xabi Alonso rifled a long-range shot off the crossbar in the 70th minute.
