Giovani Dos Santos slipped in the penalty area and Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s free kick sailed right into the waiting arms of Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, ending Mexico’s two best scoring chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half and leaving Uruguay clinging to a 1-0 lead after 60 minutes.
Uruguay’s best chance was foiled by Mexican keeper Oscar Perez, who leaped to bat down Diego Lugano’s header less than 10 minutes into the half.
The only goal of the game so far came in the 43rd minute, when Luis Suarez one-hopped a header into the Mexican net off a sweet cross from Edinson Cavani.
With South Africa leading France early in the second half of that match, Mexico remains second in Group A. So if the scores remain the same, Mexico will advance to the second round by virtue of a better goal differential than South Africa. But the margin is shrinking.
