BCS standings: SEC owns top three spots after an upset-filled weekend

The Southeastern Conference has won five consecutive Bowl Championship Series titles and seven of the 13 played, but this is getting ridiculous.

Four defeats in the BCS top 10 this weekend left three schools from the SEC West Division in the top three spots.

Louisiana State remained at No.1 in the standings with a perfect BCS average of 1.000. That means the Tigers are No.1 in both polls and No.1 BCS computer component.

Alabama took advantage of Oklahoma State’s shocking loss at Iowa State on Friday to move back into the No. 2 spot it surrendered when it lost to LSU on Nov. 5.

Alabama has an average of .9491, followed by Arkansas, the third SEC West team, at .8985.

Arkansas capitalized on Oklahoma State, Oregon and Oklahoma losses to move up three positions from No. 6.

Oklahoma State, buoyed by its No. 2 computer ranking, slipped only two spots to No. 4 with an average of .8408.

Virginia Tech moved up three positions to No. 5, followed by Stanford, Boise State, Houston, Oklahoma and Oregon.

This weekend’s shakeup in the standings increased the likelihood of an all-SEC championship game in New Orleans on Jan. 9.

It will be LSU vs. Alabama if both teams win out. LSU will clinch the West division with a win over Arkansas on Friday in Baton Rouge. LSU would then face Georgia the following week in the SEC title game.

Alabama plays at Auburn on Saturday, a matchup of the last two BCS championship teams.

There are also scenarios in which Arkansas could play Alabama for the title and LSU could play Arkansas in a rematch.

The one-loss, non-SEC contenders are rooting for LSU to beat Arkansas and Auburn to upset Alabama in Saturday’s Iron Bowl.
