C.J. Wilson derby could be down to Angels, Marlins

The Texas Rangers are resigned to the possibility that their ace, C.J. Wilson, is leaving, and the Angels and Miami Marlins appear to be the finalists to sign the free-agent left-hander.

‘Until C.J. makes a decision, we can’t rule anything out, but we understand that’s a realistic possibility,’ Texas General Manager Jon Daniels told Rangers writers at the winter meetings Wednesday afternoon. ‘I haven’t received a call to say he’s chosen to go elsewhere, but we’re prepared for that call.”

The Rangers are believed to have offered Wilson a four-year deal in the $60-million range, but the Marlins have reportedly offered a six-year deal, and the Angels are believed to have offered a five-year deal in excess of $70 million.

Some thought the Marlins would bow out of negotiations for Wilson after left-hander Mark Buehrle reportedly agreed to a four-year, $58-million deal with Miami earlier Wednesday. But the Marlins’ offer is still on the table, according to a person close to negotiations but not authorized to speak about them publicly.
