The Houston Texans are cornering the market on aging quarterbacks, signing Jeff Garcia, 41, to a contract on Wednesday.
With rookie quarterback T.J. Yates starting for the rest of the season, the Texans want as much experience as possible in reserve.
They signed Jake Delhomme, 36, last week and named him the No. 2 quarterback. Kellen Clemens, a relative baby at 28, was dropped to third-string quarterback.
Today, Clemens was dropped off the team to make room for Garcia, who has a background in the West Coast system used by the Texans and who played for quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp at San Francisco.
Garcia last played for the Omaha franchise in the United Football League. He played in the NFL from 1999 to 2009, spending most of that time with the 49ers.
Yates, a fifth-round pick from North Carolina, has played in two games. He came off the bench to replace the injured Matt Leinart in the second quarter of the 20-10 victory at Jacksonville. In his first start last week, Yates was 12 of 25 for 188 yards and a touchdown. Combined, he has completed 20 of 40 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown and has a passer rating of 79.0.
