Dwight Howard breaks Wilt Chamberlain’s free-throw record

It’s not everyday that someone manages to break one of Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA records, but that’s exactly what Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard did on Thursday night.
Howard hit 21 of a record 39 free throws in Orlando’s 117-109 victory over the Golden State Warriors, breaking Chamberlain’s nearly 50-year-old single-game record.
The Warriors tried to hack Howard into submission, but the plan didn’t work. He finished with a season-high 45 points and 23 rebounds.
Howard came into the game shooting a lowly 42.6% from the line and missed nine of 12 free throw attempts against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.
Unfortnately for the Warriors, he fared much better Thursday as he eclipsed his previous best of 24 attempts with 2:09 left in the third quarter.
Chamberlain’s top mark of 34 free throws came on Feb. 22, 1962, in a game between the Philadelphia Warriors and St. Louis Hawks. The former Lakers great and NBA Hall of Famer ranks second in NBA history with 11,862 career attempts.
