Redondo Coach Gene Simon, a former quarterback at Gardena Serra, will face off against his alma mater and a former assistant, Scott Altenberg, who is now the Cavaliers’ head coach, when the teams meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Redondo.

‘We’ve been good friends for a long time now,’ Simon said. ‘But there’s nothing [riding] on this game, or anything. We’re both just going to be trying to get our teams a win.’

So far, Serra (3-0) has more victories than Redondo (1-2), which opened with losses to Mater Dei and St. Paul but is still a one-point favorite, according to MaxPreps.com.

I’m sure Serra quarterback Ted Landers, who has completed 64 % of his passes, and junior running back Carl Winston, who has averaged 11.5 yards a carry and nearly 185 yards a game, will have something to say in the matter.

My advice to Redondo: Shut the Cavaliers down in the first half, when they tend to score most of their points, in order to beat them in the second.
