Girls’ tennis: Let’s hope it’s not another six years

Gotta love stories like this. In tennis, where gated communities and private lessons are often the ruling class, it’s great to see the little guy win. After six years, Buena Park won its first league match with a narrow victory over La Habra when Noor Altoma put away the final singles match. For more on that historic victory, and some nice things that Coach Susan Guba had to say, read the Register’s notebook.

On the other end of the spectrum, Troy and Dana Hills tied but Troy won on games, 53-48, to win the ninth All-American Tournament hosted by Corona del Mar, a tournament that serves as the unofficial state championship. It did little for Troy, though, which on Monday was still voted No. 2 in Division I in the Southern Section rankings behind Dana Hills.

Tournament host CdM, ranked third in the division, finished sixth in the tournament after losing to fourth-ranked Palos Verdes. An account of CdM’s day can be found here. Torrey Pines from San Diego finished third by defeating Danville Monte Vista, Northern California’s top team the past four seasons. Some pictures from the tournament can be found here.
