It’s shaping up to be a banner year for Inland Empire boys’ cross-country teams. Squads from San Bernardino and Riverside counties are ranked No. 1 in four of the five Southern Section divisions.

Murrieta Valley is ranked No. 1 in Division I and No. 2 in the state. Barstow is at the top of Division III and No. 9 in state, while Big Bear is No. 1 in Division IV and Woodcrest Christian owns that distinction in Division V.

Murrieta Valley and Barstow are among the teams competing in the boys’ sweepstakes race Saturday at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational, site of the Southern Section finals next month.

The Redlands girls’ team, ranked second in Division I and fifth in state, is entered in the girls’ sweepstakes race, where it will take on Saugus, the top-ranked team in the state.

On a side note, it’s nice when a team can compete out of state and still use the trip as an educational experience, much like Riverside King did last week.
