Look out everybody, here come the Dons!

Birmingham players might want to wait a little bit before ordering their 2007 City Championship football rings. The Dorsey Dons haven’t finished their season quite yet, and what I saw Wednesday night during a 48-26 thumping of Venice in the quarterfinals tells me this is a team on the rise.
Rahim Moore, pictured left, and Johnathan Franklin are exceptional seniors who are passing along their leadership and all-out heart to the younger players.
Dorsey is getting better, just in time for a semifinal game against Carson.
Most impressive was the poise and play of sophomore quarterback Joshua Williamson. I came in thinking Dorsey doesn’t have a passing attack. I left thinking that the passing attack might be good enough to win a City title during any season other than this year, when Birmingham might have one of the best City teams in years. The fact Williamson keeps improving is encouraging for the Dons, because Franklin is a terrific running back and an even better role model for his teammates.
So it’s going to be an intriguing final two weeks of the City Section season. Birmingham will be heavily favored to knock off Crenshaw, and Carson will probably be favored to defeat Dorsey. But if you want my upset special, it’s the Dons over the Colts, with a Birmingham-Dorsey final. And just because Dorsey lost to Birmingham, 30-10, on Sept. 28 doesn’t mean things can’t be reversed. It’s unlikely, but don’t count out the improving Dons.
