Quarterback Matt Barkley of Mater Dei has been selected the Gatorade California football player of the year.
Considering he’s only a junior, it sets up Barkley to be recognized as the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the nation for 2008.
He’s 6 feet 4, weighs 220 pounds, has a 3.77 grade-point average and is coming off a junior season in which he passed for 3,576 yards and 35 touchdowns and led the Monarchs (9-2) to the Southern Section Pac-5 quarterfinals.
