Opening quarter is all Colony’s

Colony owns Canyon Springs.

The Titans blew out Canyon Springs in a Central Division semifinal last season and it appears they’re at it again in the finals tonight.

Colony leads, 14-0, after the opening quarter, getting a 30-yard touchdown run from Daniel Simmons on its first drive and a 28-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Ginolfi to Elon Wyatt on the second. In between, Anthony Young intercepted an ill-advised pass from Canyon Springs quarterback Ryan Warren.

The Cougars look like one of the worst tackling teams I’ve seen this season, missing about five chances to stop Simmons on his touchdown run. The defensive backs seem overmatched as well. The cornerback who was trying to cover Wyatt on his touchdown reception was juked so badly on the route that he fell on his backside, leaving Wyatt alone in the end zone.

About the only problem Colony seems to have tonight is with penalties. The Titans were called for three in the first three minutes.

The Canyon Springs coaches in the next room just had their first fist slam on the counter. The Cougars ran inside the Titan 20-yard line, but flags flew. It turned out to be offsetting penalities, so the coach probably bruised his knuckles for nothing.

Canyon Springs just scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter, so it’s now 14-7, but I still don’t think Canyon Springs stands a chance.
