Good and bad news hit the Buckley girls’ basketball team on Tuesday night.

The good news is Buckley proved it’s a contender for the Liberty League title with a 57-40 victory over defending champion Providence. Sophomore Lindsay Schapiro, who averages a team-high 11.5 ppg this season, scored 15 in the victory and senior teammate Jackie Sparagna netted 14.

The bad news is Buckley played without Coach Byrd Newman-Milic watching from his usual place on the sidelines.

The longtime Buckley coach and Athletic Director has been experiencing flu-like symptoms since the Griffins returned from a tournament in Oakland last week. He told assistant coach Marie Philman he was planning to check himself into the hospital Tuesday night.

‘It’s really bad,’ Philman said. ‘He’s got a fever and everything.... We just hope he’ll be back soon.’

It appears to be a two-horse race for the league title between Buckley and Viewpoint. The teams will meet on Jan. 22.
