A few weeks back when I was in The Times’ newsroom watching the New Orleans Bowl I was thinking to myself, ‘Why wouldn’t Valencia QB Graham Wilbert go to Florida Atlantic University?’

I already knew FAU was interested in the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder and the Owls’ high-powered offense looked like a perfect fit for a kid who wants to throw the ball and run up the score.

Well, on Sunday, Wilbert committed to FAU after the All-Foothill League first teamer made a visit down to Boca Raton, Fla. over the weekend.

Wilbert passed for an impressive 2,725 yards and 26 interceptions, providing the guiding force for a Vikings team that posted a 7-4-1 record following a 2-8 campaign in 2006. Valencia finished third in the Foothill League and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Northern Division playoffs.

And it’s great to see all those incredible numbers come in handy. Hopefully, Wilbert can make bowl appearances a more common event for the Owls in the coming years.
