In case you’ve fallen into a rain-induced basketball coma over the past week, let me help you get caught up on all the big developments from the SF Valley/North girls’ Southern Section basketball scene.
Harvard-Westlake beat an injury-riddled Saugus squad on Saturday to hand the Centurions their third consecutive loss, and Ventura also proved this weekend it’s one of the best in Southern California with a great comeback attempt against Cajon. Also, Palmdale kicked Knight out of the top 10.
Here’s my top-10 teams:
1. Ventura (20-2, 5-0) -- Saturday’s game against Marlborough will offer another challenge.
2. St. Joseph (19-1, 7-0) -- Senior 6-foot-1 center Devin Reizebos is averaging 14 ppg.
3. Harvard-Westlake (14-8, 5-1) -- Where did Janine Zelden come from? Sophomore scored 17 against Saugus.
4. Royal (17-4, 8-1) -- Ridin’ easy until Newbury Park road trip on Feb. 6.
5. Buena (14-8, 4-1) -- Bulldogs at full steam heading into showdown with Ventura on Thursday.
6. Hart (14-8, 5-1) -- Narrow victory over Saugus nice; huge loss to Buena a little baffling.
7. Saugus (17-6, 4-2) -- Games against West Ranch and Golden Valley should give the Cents a chance to lick their wounds.
8. Valencia (15-7, 4-2) -- Victory over Saugus cancels out loss to Canyon.
9. Oaks Christian (15-3, 7-1) -- Tri-Valley title showdown with Fillmore on Thursday.
10. Fillmore (16-5, 7-0) -- Aimee Orozco, Rebeca Herrera & Co. on nine-game winning streak.
Feel free to use the comment board to tell me what you really think about these rankings. Don’t worry, I can take the punishment.
