Second half is all Riverside King’s in 82-56 victory over Fremont

So much for that great second half.

The King boys’ basketball team thoroughly dominated Fremont the last 16 minutes of their Southern California Regional first-round game at King, outscoring the visiting Pathfinders, 46-17, on its way to a 82-56 victory.

The player of the game was a shoe-in, but he’s usually an afterthought in most cases.

J.J. Campbell scored a career-high 29 points, including 15 in the deciding third quarter.

‘The team worked together and I was open, so I got the ball,’ said Campbell, who came in averaging 7.5 points.

I’m wondering what Fremont snacked on at halftime because they went into the locker room with a three-point lead and came out with butterfingers, as the Highlanders committed seven turnovers in the first four minutes and quickly gave up the lead.

Popcorn anyone?

After winning the Southern Section Division I-A title Saturday night in overtime, I expected the Wolves to slow it down in the second half, but they beat Fremont up and down the floor.

‘Coach said to come back alive and that’s what we did,’ Campbell said. ‘We were a little sluggish, probably from the long game Saturday night, but we listened to coach and came out with a win.’

More like a drubbing.
