‘Surprise, surprise!’ as Gomer Pyle would say. Yes, there’s a surprise at Long Beach Wilson.

The No. 12 softball team is ranked higher by The Times than the No. 17 baseball team. A few weeks back, you wouldn’t have thought that this could happen. Especially since the baseball team entered the year as the defending national champions and whom many preps yodas considered as the top team in the country.

But the baseball team (11-3-1) has already lost as many games as it did all of last season and has suffered a big injury -- ace Ray Hanson went down with a broken hand.

And the softball team -- which, I believed, entered the season unranked -- has a healthy ace in Calle Nikoletich (6-1) and dangerous Jessica O’Donnell (.567 average and 11 RBI).

Now, let’s see if the softball team (11-3-1) keeps surprising us.
