It looks as if Joe Crespi was right -- the Mission League title race is far from over, and Loyola proved that on Friday with a 10-8 upset of Crespi.

Behind a six-run barrage in the second inning spearheaded by talented metalworkers Steve Selsky and Brian Glass, the Cubs officially crashed what looked to be an exclusive title engagement between Crespi and Notre Dame. At least that’s the kind of message we’ve been beaming out through our rankings the past few weeks.

‘This is huge,’ Loyola assistant coach Roger Stewart said. ‘To get a big league win like shows that we’re ready to go for the championship.’

While the victory over the National Classic champions was a great way to end their four-game losing streak, the Cubs realize they still have a tough trek ahead if they want to seriously challenge for the league title. In fact, they’re going to have to rely on somebody else upsetting Crespi and Notre Dame if they’re going to have a realistic shot at a championship.

Still, winning the league title isn’t everything -- remember last spring when the Cubs beat the Mission League champion Celts in the semifinals en route to the Division III title?
